production of secular music
Sequence of the Catholic liturgy, dating from the 13th century and performed on Good Friday. The text is attributed to Jacopone da Todi and expresses the anguish of the Madonna before the Cross. Its dramatic ingenuousness led Pergolesi to compose this sacred music of great note. It is one of the few 18th century Italian compositions still played today.
