This is one of the liveliest and musically most brilliant of Donizetti’s farces. It is melodically original and fluent, orchestrated with delicate, ironic touches that perfectly describe the characters in the opera. Rita, believing her husband Gaspare to be dead, marries Beppe, but Gaspare reappears, he wants to remarry in Canada and needs to destroy the only document testifying to his first marriage. With a stratagem he manages to do it and Beppe, who had dreamed of re-acquiring his freedom, is obliged to take Rita back.
